NSW Liberal Leader and Shadow Minister for Western Sydney Peter Debnam today congratulated the Socceroos on their heroic comeback victory against Japan overnight.

"Many of the heroes who led the way for the Socceroos were born and bred in Western Sydney," Mr Debnam said.

"Two-goal hero Tim Cahill, Harry Kewell, Craig Moore, and Brett Emerton are all products of Western Sydney," he said.

"Other squad members with connections to Western Sydney include Jason Culina, Tony Popovic, Zeljko Kalac, Michael Beauchamp, Ante Covic, Mark Schwarzer, and Archie Thompson.

"And Harry Kewell, Michael Beauchamp and Jason Culina were all educated at that outstanding public school which has produced so many sporting stars, Westfield Sports High in Fairfield West.

"The Socceroos World Cup dream has captured the imagination of the entire country and after last night's win no-one would dare question our ability to match up against the best in the world.

"I urge all bosses with weary staff today to give them a break as we all share in the glory of our first ever World Cup win.

"I wish the team the very best of luck in our match against favourites Brazil next week," Mr Debnam said.
