NGINYANG, Kenya - Natural Fire 2006, the largest combined exercise between East African Community nations and the United States, has officially come to an end. However the memories, friendships and commitment to continue helping those in need lives on in the hearts and minds of all of those who participated.

“The exercise was a success,” said Kenyan Brig. Gen. L.M. Nogondi, Natural Fire commanding general. “The commitment of the men and women involved has allowed four nations to gather, work together and achieve what was meant to be achieved…cooperative humanitarianism.”

The combined exercise, which involved military personnel from Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda and the U.S., focused on military-to-military training on how to respond to natural disasters. Real world medical, veterinary and engineering civil action programs were completed simultaneously in rural areas of each EAC country as well {Click on image for photo details}

KABUL, Afghanistan – Senior enlisted leaders from Pakistan, Afghanistan and the United States met for the first time this week to share insights between their respective armed forces and future interoperability.

“Building a relationship between these forces is essential,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel Wood, Combined Forces Command-Afghanistan command sergeant major, the top U.S. NCO in the country.

Wood said he thought it was important to create an enduring engagement plan because the relationship between Afghanistan and Pakistan is important not only to the U.S. mission in Afghanistan, but also to the overall campaign in support of the war on terror.

The meeting, linked to the U.S. Central Command’s Theater Security Cooperation program, coincided with the 18th Tripartite Commission meeting, made up of senior military and diplomatic representatives from Afghanistan, Pakistan, Coalition forces in Afghanistan, and NATO’s International Security Assistance Force. {Click on image for photo details}

FOB KALSU, Iraq – “He who kills a person without reason is like he who kills all humanity.” – from the Holy Koran.

Seeking a unified province free from terrorism and factional violence, leaders of Iraqi groups in Babil came together Aug. 20 in al-Hillah to reconcile and denounce the attacks that have plagued the country.

Iraqi security forces leadership, representatives of the Iraqi national government, local government officials, civic leaders, tribal sheiks and religious leaders joined together at the Iraqi Police academy convention hall to map out a strategic plan to shape a peaceful future for Babil.

“This was Iraqi generated, Iraqi led,” said Col. John Tully, commander, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, an invited guest of the ISF leadership. “They are clearly trying to come to grips with the issues their society is facing.”

The meeting was orchestrated by Maj. Gen. Qais Hamza, Babil provincial police chief, to bring representatives of every facet of Babil culture to the conference and provide them a forum to speak. It was hoped the meeting would signify the commencement of a new era in the region and the beginning of the end of terrorism in southern Iraq, said a sheik in attendance {Click on image for photo details}

CAMP AL ASAD, Iraq – More than 500 Iraqi men were screened and accepted for service as police officers in their local communities during a three-day recruiting/screening drive in Iraq’s western Al Anbar Province recently.

U.S. Marines screened thousands of applicants Aug. 11-14, 2006, in various regions along the western Euphrates River valley, to include the border city of Al Qa’im, Haditha, and Baghdadi – a small town just miles east of this sprawling U.S. air base.

The three-day event was the most successful recruiting/screening drive for U.S. and Iraqi forces in this region to date, according to Maj. Lowell Rector, officer-in-charge of the police transition team for Regimental Combat Team 7.

Al-Jazeera devoted an hour to discussing Bush's use of his phrase. Viewers who called in said they were infuriated. Tough. Bloggers have disputed the legitimacy of connecting Islam and fascism.

Personally, I consider Islamo-fascist among the most useful of the present neologisms, acceptably accurate in its portrayal of our enemies and filling an awkward gap in English vocabulary.

BAGHDAD — Iraqi and Coalition forces joined this week to squelch the violence in Ameriya, a key neighborhood in west Baghdad, as part of a city-wide operation known as Amaliya Ma’an ila Al-Amam or Operation Together Forward.

“The purpose was to eliminate terrorists and death squads in and around Ameriya,” said Iraqi army Brig. Gen. Abdul Jaleel in a press conference Wednesday.

Jaleel is the commander of 1st Brigade, 6th Iraq Army Division. The unit took the lead in a recent sweep of the town with the U.S. 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division as support.

The Iraqi and Coalition forces searched about 6,000 houses and buildings in the Ameriya neighborhood, said Jaleel. The local citizens requested the market area be secured first.

Marines with the Hawaii-based 3rd Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, or “America’s Battalion”, are combating the insurgency with local police officers – who recently received “much needed” new gear to get the job done – pistols, protective vests, rifles and batons to use while patrolling the city’s streets.

Commander, Multi-National Force – Iraq

This week Iraqis celebrated another significant advance toward their sovereign democracy. Today the 4th Iraqi Army Division assumed responsibility for operations from the American 101st Airborne Division. Half the Iraqi Army divisions are now in the lead for planning and controlling security operations in Iraq.

Although Iraqis still suffer horrendous brutality at the hands of death squads and terrorists, the strategic glass in Iraq is half-full. Now, after decades of dictatorship and oppression, Iraqis mark another milestone on their march to freedom and security self-reliance.

Despite the efforts of those who would wrest newfound freedom from their grasp, the Iraqi people and their security forces continue to press inexorably forward. As Iraqi security forces stand up, their Coalition partners can stand down. Indeed, 4th Division’s assumption of responsibility for controlling counterinsurgency operations releases some Coalition forces to support operations elsewhere in the nation. {Click on image for photo details}

Speech by Minister for Health Ageing

Health Ageing
Originally uploaded by Sydney Weasel.
A Press Club address is a rare chance to tell hundreds of thousands of TV viewers what the Government has done, what the Government is doing and what the Government plans to do next. It’s also an opportunity to explain the thinking behind the Government’s decisions to an audience which understands politics.

Almost every opinion poll rates health as the public’s most important issue. Health stories are a media staple yet, compared to (say) workplace relations, health attracts little philosophical controversy. The political argument is usually over funding (which, almost by definition, is never enough) or capacity for human error (to which all systems are prone). It’s instructive (and for the Commonwealth Government somewhat reassuring) that proposals to change the health system, rather than keep it essentially as it is, are the ones that generate the most political controversy. In health, people want problems solved. They don’t want systems changed unless, of course, there’s something fundamentally wrong with them, which is not currently the case with the health services for which the Commonwealth has principal responsibility.
