This is a great day for Australia, for our institutions, for our people and the messages that we send to the rest of the world about the way that we conduct our democratic affairs. It is also a great day because, as the Prime Minister has said, after 107 years our 25th Governor-General is finally a woman.

We will consider Professor Garnaut’s figures very carefully. But, it is the Government’s figures we want, so as to understand the impact of their ETS on Australian jobs and on global emissions.

What we did over 11 and a half years, as you know, we paid off close to $100 billion in Commonwealth debt. We took Australia from debt and deficit budgeting to one now where people expect there to be a surplus. In addition to that we left more than $60 billion invested in Australia’s future. And we managed a very strong terms of trade with the resources and commodities boom over the last seven years; we managed that still keeping inflation between the two to three per cent band. And we got unemployment down to the lowest level in 34 years.
