One Rule for PM and Another for Workers!

Under questioning in estimates today, The Deputy Secretary of the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, Mike Mrdak, confirmed the Department’s preference for flexible work practices.

Following questioning about part-time workers, from Queensland Senator Sue Boyce, Mr Mrdak stated that workplace conditions are ‘very much driven by the individual’ and that work practices were ‘tailored to personal circumstances’ whenever possible.

Mr Mrdak said part time employees were able to bargain for flexible conditions and many employees with small children and carer responsibilities choose to take the opportunity.

Since the Rudd Government took office, the use of part time staffers in the Department has more than doubled from 3.9 to 8.2 percent.

“Individual flexibility appears to be a good thing for the Prime Minister, but not for Australian workers and business under the Fair Work Bill,” Senator Boyce said.
