POLLS have opened in the electorate of Penrith in western Sydney with Labor expected to take a battering. Polling stations opened at 8am (AEST) on Saturday with eight candidates vying for the Penrith seat, which stretches into the lower Blue Mountains, taking in the well-off suburbs of Lapstone and Glenbrook. Over 46,000 people are registered to vote in the electorate. The Liberal Party's Stuart Ayres has gone into the by-election as the favourite, but still needs to overcome a swing of more than 9.2 per cent toward Labor. Centrebet has Mr Ayres as favourite to win at $1.05 compared to Labor candidate John Thain's $7.50. Mr Thain is a former Penrith councillor. Saturday's by-election was sparked by the resignation of disgraced Labor MP Karen Paluzzano who admitted to misusing public funds and lying about it.

Rally for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's 65th Birthday

Outside the Capitol Building (NE Corner)
4-7pm Cultural Performances at National City Christian Church

(5 Thomas Circle NW)

I wanted to send you this final reminder about the rally and performance for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi's 65th birthday taking place this Saturday, June 19th. Please come to show your support for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma.
This is a critical time for Burma, as the military junta is carrying out its sham election this year and has unjustly declared Aung San Suu Ky's party, the National League for Democracy, illegal. We must continue to support Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and her party, despite the military's attempts to silence their voices.

Tomorrow, we will gather to rally for the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and 2,200 political prisoners, and denounce Burma's military regime and the upcoming sham elections. We will call on the U.S. government to support an UN-led Commission of Inquiry to investigate crimes against humanity and war crimes in Burma. Ending the system of impunity in burma starts right now!
After the rally, a cultural event featuring performers from different states will take place at the National City Christian Church. The event will feature traditional Burman, Karen, and Chin dances - a display of unity among Burma's diverse ethnic groups. Help us give the gift of solidarity and support for Daw Aung San Suu Kyi on her 65th birthday as she continues her fight for human rights in Burma.
The rally will be held at the NE corner outside the Capitol Building, (First Street and Constitution Ave, NE, location number 9 on the map!) The performance will take place at National City Christian Church, (5 Thomas Circle, NW), 4-7pm. Maps pasted below.

Please email me at mike@uscampaignforburma.org if you need more information.

Hope to see you there!

Mike
Aung San Suu Kyi once said, "24 hours can bring a total revolutionary change." Her 65th birthday is only 24 hours away. We have been working to build global support for the detained Nobel Peace Prize Laureate of Burma as she prepares to spend yet another birthday under house arrest. Will you stand with us as we stand with Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Burma?

If you are unable to host an Arrest Yourself event, please consider making a special contribution in honor of Aung San Suu Kyi to the U.S. Campaign for Burma.

This is one of only two times per year when we appeal to you for donations to support our work. For the past few years, the money we raised around Aung San Suu Kyi's birthday has helped make our critical advocacy campaigns possbile throughout the rest of the year.

Hundreds of people across the US and around the world are launching birthday events for the Lady to show that we all are standing together with her. We are joined by world leaders and prominent members of society who are issuing statements to mark her birthday and to support her in her quest for justice and rights in Burma.

Please help us continue our work to rally the US government and the international community to denounce the Burmese military regime and its upcoming sham elections, and to show our undying support for Aung San Suu Kyi. Please donate to U.S. Campaign for Burma today.

At the bottom of this email you can read about some of the events taking place around the world to honor Aung San Suu Kyi.

Thank you for your efforts and generosity. For Burma, for freedom.

Blaming BP so as to appear balanced on Obama
By Bill O'Reilly
British Petroleum CEO Tony Hayward, a sock puppet in Washington. That is the subject of this evening's "Talking Points Memo." Testifying before the House Energy and Commerce Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations, Hayward appeared shaky and shaken.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REP. JOHN DINGELL, D-MICH.: Could you tell us how much money BP saved by not using the proper number of centralizers?

TONY HAYWARD: I'm afraid I can't recall that.

DINGELL: Would you submit that for the record? How much time was saved?

HAYWARD: And I don't recall that either, I'm afraid.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Meantime, Congressman John Sullivan pointed out that while Exxon Mobil had just one safety violation in the recent past, BP had 760. Again, Hayward had no answer. In fact, the CEO pretty much dodged all specific questions leading the chairman of the subcommittee to say this:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REP. HENRY WAXMAN, D-CALIF.: I'm just amazed at this testimony, Mr. Hayward. You're not taking responsibility. You're kicking the can down the road and acting as if you have nothing to do with this company and nothing to do with the decisions. I find that irresponsible.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

While the scorn of BP came from both parties, some conservatives were sympathetic:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REP. JOE BARTON, R-TEXAS: I do not want to live in a country where any time a citizen or a corporation does something that is legitimately wrong is subject to some sort of political pressure that is, again, in my words, amounts to a shakedown. So I apologize.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Well, afterward, Mr. Barton clarified his remarks, saying he wants to hold BP responsible, but there's no question that some on the right do not like President Obama's strong-arming the oil giant:

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

REP. MICHELE BACHMANN, R-MINN.: Private companies need to be held accountable, but not necessarily to the executive branch. It seems to me there's a misreading of the constitution and a misunderstanding of jurisdictional limits from this White House on what the extent of executive power is. They don't seem to understand that. And it now seems that it's all about extortion.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

Well, Ms. Bachmann is referring to the fact that BP has been coerced by the president to put up at least $20 billion in a fund to benefit those hurt by BP's dereliction. And "Talking Points" believes the corporation was derelict. The questioning today pointed out that BP ignored warnings about the now destroyed deep water well and may have done so to save money.

It is the job of the federal government to protect the American people. In this case, the Feds did not monitor BP closely enough. But that's history. Now the important thing is to clean up the Gulf and to help folks who have been harmed by the spill. BP should pay for all of that. All of it. And Mr. Obama was correct in bringing pressure on the company to pony up the money. I don't really care how the president did it. I'm happy there's $20 billion in play and more to come. And we will watch that money to make sure it gets to the right people and places.

Politics aside, this whole thing is BP's fault. Hayward would be smart to just admit that and take his lumps.

FISTS OF KEVIN
Tim Blair
“Do you remember when Krudd tried to emulate the Obamas’ famous ‘fist bump’ with Therese at Canberra Airport?” asks Alphamikefoxtrot in comments. “I can’t find a link to it anywhere but I remember never having cringed so much in my life.” Prepare to cringe again, mate:
Rudd himself might be cringing after reading the latest from Laurie Oakes:
Labor is preparing for defeat. Some more seasoned warriors believe it is unavoidable …

We are now past the point of knowing there’s a chance Labor could lose what looked like an unlosable election. If the next Newspoll confirms Labor’s slump, the brutal truth is that the Rudd Government is very likely gone …

Sorry Kev, but there’s no inevitability about a second chance – which means you’re probably cactus.
Bring on October. Or August. Or September.

UPDATE. Whoa:
Key Labor MPs are prepared to move against Kevin Rudd’s leadership to make way for Julia Gillard as early as next week.
UPDATE II. Rudd vs Gillard! “You sayin’ you want a piece of me?”

Define “stopped”
Andrew Bolt
Stopped from going where?
THE navy has stopped the fourth and fifth suspected asylum-seeker boats to enter Australian waters in the past week. HMAS Armadale stopped a vessel with an estimated 26 people on board yesterday west of the Lacepede Islands, 120km north of Western Australia’s tourist town of Broome. HMAS Wollongong intercepted another boat with 48 passengers northwest of Christmas Island.

Both groups will be taken to Christmas Island for security, identity and health checks.

They were on the 70th and 71st boats to arrive this year.
Before Kevin Rudd weakened our laws, we’d get three boats in an average year. Now we can get five in a single week.

Rudd only one opinion poll from the sack
Andrew Bolt
Laurie Oakes gives up on Rudd:
Labor is preparing itself for defeat and some of the more seasoned warriors believe it is unavoidable.

A prominent backbencher commented that switching leaders might give Julia Gillard “a chance of at least saving the furniture"…

If next week’s Newspoll confirms the depth of Labor’s slump, the brutal truth is that the Rudd Government is very likely gone…

An ALP strategist says: “Are people sh----- and sending a message through the polls, or have they genuinely switched off Kevin? That is the million-dollar question.”

I think they have switched off. If that is the case, nothing Rudd does will help.
Dennis Shanahan and Patricia Karvelas:
KEY Labor MPs are prepared to move against Kevin Rudd’s leadership to make way for Julia Gillard as early as next week.
A challenge depends on Labor’s polling not dramatically improving and the dispute with miners over the super-profits tax not being resolved soon.

Labor MPs surveyed by The Weekend Australian believe the government’s support has “tanked” in western Sydney, Western Australia and Queensland and that Labor should change leaders to restore confidence or risk losing the election.
As for his successor:
FORMER Labor leader Mark Latham has launched a scathing attack on Julia Gillard, formerly one of his staunchest supporters, saying the deputy prime minister is wasting a lot of time on stunts and trivia… ”She has the lost the gravitas that was her trademark three year ago.”
Let’s recall a prediction which just 20 days ago made me seem like I was hallucinating:
My tip is that Rudd is now finished and will be replaced. I’m guessing this could even occur within four weeks.
UPDATE

Rudd comes out swinging a fist. Sadly, it sums up the doubts of many.

UPDATE 2

The pressure on Rudd could come even earlier than on Tuesday, when Newspoll comes out:
The Labor Government in New South Wales is bracing itself for a tough by-election in the seat of Penrith in western Sydney on Saturday…

If the stories of voters speaking to ABC’s Radio National are typical, it spells trouble for Prime Minister Kevin Rudd federally as well as the Labor brand in the states.
(Thanks to reader ML.)

UPDATE 3

The world really is upside down. First Oakes writes off Rudd, now Peter Hartcher praises Tony Abbott’s record as a minister:
.... it does entitle him to be considered a competent minister and an effective wielder of executive power.
UPDATE 4

Reader Don Morgan (above) explains why he’s doubted Kevin Rudd for years:

I want to briefly tell you a story about the time when Kevin Rudd was working for Wayne Goss.

When I first heard of Kevin Rudd it was probably 1990 or 1991. He was then referred to as Doctor Death because he was the head of the Razor Gang that was ruthlessly going through the Queensland state government cutting jobs and research programs…

The story I want to tell you about was during the late 1980’s and early 1990’s, I was a research physicist working at the Queensland Government Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (SIMTARS). I was employed on a contract basis to investigate the Moura Coal Mine explosion that occurred in 1986 which killed 12 coal miners. The funding for the investigation came from several Federal Government grants (NERDDP) as well as from the Queensland state government.

How Dipper should have dressed it up
Andrew Bolt
Robert DiPierdomenico’s ”not too bad for an Abo” joke is appalling racism:
The AFL confirmed this afternoon that DiPierdomenico would be stood down from his role as AusKick ambassador indefinitely without pay and forced to undergo counselling following the revelation that he said (Gavin) Wanganeen was “not too bad for an abo” at a footy function.
The Age’s ”not too bad for an Indigenous person” match report is enlightened:

...in a week marred by offensive comments from a bygone era, it was fitting two young indigenous footballers led the way at the MCG last night…

While (Cyril) Rioli turned heads and drew gasps, the slightly shorter, slightly older Alwyn Davey was in the thick of the action for Essendon… Both players ...now thrill fans across the country with their passion for the contest and their instinctive way of playing.

Rioli ... the Hawks’ emerging cult hero peeled off kick after kick and darted like an excited rabbit up, down and around the ground....When he wasn’t having shots at goal, Davey was tackling and applying the sort of defensive pressure that’s made ‘’defensive pressure’’ buzz words of the modern game…

Rioli lit up the stadium ... Former Essendon coach Kevin Sheedy, who did more than anyone during his time at Windy Hill to promote the natural talents of indigenous players…

Franklin’s second goal of the match came courtesy of, you guessed it, Rioli delivering the Sherrin to the big forward… it was Rioli’s smothering and desperation around the ball that helped set up midfielder and indigenous star Shaun Burgoyne’s goal after the siren…

Davey kicked a minor score, laid a tackled and was rewarded with a free kick… at least Davey had a spoon and was digging, hard… Davey’s side mounting a fierce counter-attack… it was Davey’s second major that cut the margin to six points. The younger brother of Melbourne star Aaron Davey, Alwyn jumped in the air, pumped his fists and gave the Bomber fans hope.

Immediately after the break, Patrick Ryder, another indigenous player, kicked the goal that levelled the score.

In his 49th game, Davey had a few more tricks up his sleeve… If not for Franklin’s stunning, running, three-bounce goal from the boundary line, Rioli and Davey would be the talk of the town.

At least the talk will have moved on from Brown’s comments and centred again on the breathtaking skills of these indigenous stars.

Once paper was read, now it’s thrown over a balcony
Andrew Bolt
Once the greatest acts of creativity in a library involved actually opening the books at some stage to engage with the thoughts therein:
AN artist has been paid $10,000 to float 10,000 paper planes in Victoria’s State Library.

Ross Coulter wants to track “thought patterns” in the La Trobe (Domed) Reading Room by releasing the planes from balcony “stacks”, and will use a Georges Mora Foundation Fellowship to pay for the project.

“Its going to be part performance and part video artwork,” he said. “A playful act of rebellion in a way. But then creativity has always been bound up with rebellious acts.”

Yesterday Coulter was one of 11 writers, artists and researchers who were awarded $150,000 to “make scholarly, literary or creative use” of the library’s rich collections.
A rebellion against what? Reading? Knowledge? Thought?
